Wet Heath
Where the sands are poorly drained with low nutrient levels, the soil has become acid and peat has formed, we find the plants and animals that have evolved to enjoy these special conditions. Acid frogs and ground parrots are indicators that such conditions exist. Any interference to the drainage pattern causes a change in the pH value.
Filling such areas or invasion by roadworks, with the attendant clearing/fertiliser/weed infestation, destroys an ancient and fragile ecosystem.
